How to Merge Disk Partitions in Windows 10

How to Merge Disk Partitions in Windows 10 | Step By Step Guide

To optimize disk space, you sometimes need to shrink, extend, move, or merge 2 partitions. Two typical examples of why merging partitions for Windows 10/8/7 computer: 1, system Drive C runs out of space, combining it with another partition you can increase the free space of drive C. 2, There are too many volumes that make it difficult to find the partition and the files you need. In this article, I’ll introduce detailed steps for merging partitions into Windows 10/8/7 without losing data. Combine partitions with Windows native tools and the best free partitioning software. Select the appropriate tool and method according to your own disk partition configuration.

3 Ways to Merge Partitions on Windows 10/8/7 Computer

To combine partitions in Windows 10 and Windows 8/7, there are 3 options: disk management, diskpart, and third-party partition software. Disk management is an integrated component of all Windows Operating systems, which can perform basic management operations such as creating, deleting, and formatting a volume. Windows Added 7 disk management, volume reduction, and volume extension features to help resize the partition without losing data (in most cases).

Windows 8 and 10 inherited the same features without any improvement. There is no Merge Volumes feature built into Disk Management, but you can indirectly merge 2 partitions through another Extend Volume feature.

Unlike Disk Management that has a graphical interface, Diskpart works through the command line. It’s a little difficult for ordinary users. Although these 2 native tools work differently, they have the same limitations when merging partitions into Windows 10/8/7 computers:

  1. Both partitions to be merged must be the same Primary or Logical.
  2. Both partitions are on the same disk.
  3. The target partition must be formatted with an NTFS file system.
  4. They cannot merge 2 nonadjacent partitions.
  5. They can only merge a volume on the contiguous left one: merge drive D with C or merge drive E with D.

Third-party software has no such restrictions and is much easier with multiple clicks. Let’s see how to merge partitions in Windows 10/8/7 with each tool.

(1) How to merge partitions into Windows 10 Disk Management

As I said earlier, Windows 10 has no merge volume function. Another Extend Volume function performs the merge operation. This function can only combine unassigned space up to the contiguous septum on the left. Therefore, you have to delete the correct partition in advance by yourself. If you cannot delete this partition, run third-party software. If you can, remember to back up or transfer files before deleting them.

Steps to merge partitions in Windows 10 using Disk Management:

  1. Press Windows and X together on the keyboard, and then click Disk Management in the list.
  2. Right-click the right partition (such as drive D:) and select Delete Volume, then your disk space will be converted to Unassigned.
  3. Right-click the left partition (such as drive C 🙂 and select Extend Volume.
  4. Click Next to Finish in the pop-up dialog boxes.

Before long, the original D drive merges with drive C.

If you are using Windows 7 or 8, press Windows and R keys together, type diskmgmt. MSc and press Enter to open Disk Management.

(2) How to merge partitions using diskpart command

The same with Disk Management, to merge Windows 10 partitions with the diskpart command, you must delete the right partition beforehand and merge the unallocated space with the left partition. If you do not want to delete any partitions, skip to the next section.

Steps to merge partitions in Windows 10/8/7 with Diskpart cmd:

  1. Transfer all files from the correct partition to another location.
  2. Press Windows and R hotkeys, type diskpart, and presenter, the command prompt window opens.
  3. Input list volume and press Enter, then you will see all partitions in a list.
  4. Input select volume D and press Enter. (D is the drive letter or the correct partition number).
  5. Input delete volume and press Enter.
  6. Input select volume C and press Enter. (C is the drive letter or left partition number).
  7. Input extends, and press Enter.

Some people like to use Windows native tools that think they have the best support, but it’s not true for disk partition management. 3 main reasons why third partition software is better:

  • Neither disk management nor the Diskpart command is 100% secure; I have encountered the problem several times that disk management destroyed my partitions.
  • Both native tools cannot cancel or undo any operations, even if you did something wrong.
  • Third-party software has many more functions, such as converting, copying, deleting, scanning.

(3) How to merge partitions with a free partition editor software

To help merge partitions for Windows 10 computers, there are many third-party partitioning programs. Better than other NIUBI Partition Editor tools has a unique Rollback of 1 second, Virtual Mode, and Cancel in The Well technologies to protect your system and data. It has a free edition with Windows 10/8/7/Vista/XP home computer users. To perform any operation, you only need to click, drag, and drop on the disk map. When you merge 2 contiguous partitions, all files will be moved to a folder in the root directory of the destination partition automatically.

Steps to merge Windows 10 partitions without deleting volume or losing data:

STEP 1: DOWNLOAD NIUBI Partition Editor, right-click the partition you want to merge and select“Merge Volume.”

STEP 2: In the pop-up window, click the checkboxes for both partitions, and then click OK.

When you merge two volumes of data, you can select one as the destination from the drop-down box. But when you merge C and D Drives, you can only select C as the destination because the system partition cannot be deleted. Therefore, merging the C: system partition with the data volume (D 🙂 is disabled.

STEP 3: Press Apply at the top left for it to take effect. (The actual disk partitions will not be changed until you click Apply to confirm).

After you complete the volume merge, open the target partition (here are C 🙂 in Windows File Explorer, and you will see a bend named D to C (date and time). All D files will be moved to this folder automatically.

One of the partitions will be deleted, regardless of the tool you use, whether you want to combine two data units. But if you want to extend drive C when merging D, it is not suggested because:

  1. You will lose data if you forget to back up or transfer before deleting the partition (with Windows native tools).
  2. ALL Windows services, applications, shortcuts that point to D: drive will stop working after deleting them.
  3. In some cases, you still cannot extend drive C after deleting D.

The best idea is to reduce drive D, some of the free space will be freed up, and all files will remain intact, then add the unsigned space to drive C. This way, nothing will be changed except the partition size. Better than Windows Native Tools, NIUBI Partition Editor can create unassigned space on the left or right side by shrinking a partition and merging unassigned space into an adjoining or nonadjacent partition on the same disk. Follow the steps to expand drive C by reducing other partitions:

About Partition Merge on Disk 0 and Disk 1 (Separate Disk)

If you want to merge a volume of data on Disk 1 with the system C drive on Disk 0, no partitioning software can do so because the size of a disk is fixed. If there is not enough free space on the same disk, you have two options:

  1. Move a data partition on Disk 0 to another disk, then delete it and merge unassigned space to drive C.
  2. Copy the entire disk from the system to a larger disk and extend the partition with extra space.

In addition to merging partitions into Windows 10/8/7/Vista/XP computer, NIUBI Partition Editor helps you perform many other operations, such as shrinking, extending, converting, defragmenting, hiding, deleting, scanning bad sectors.
